Icould see no valley, no farms, no cottages and no church spire -- only a lake. Idecided that I must have taken a wrong turning somewhere. So I drove back tothe town and began to retrace the route, taking frequent glances at the map. Ilanded up at the same corner. The curious thing was that the lake was notmarked on the map. I felt as if Ihad stumbled into a nightmare country,as you sometimes do in dreams. And, asin a nightmare, there was nobody in sight to help me. Fortunately for me,as I was wondering what to do next, there appeared on the horizon a man onhorseback, riding in my direction. Iwaited till he came near, then I asked him the way to our old village. He saidthat there was now no village. I thought he must have misunderstood me, so Irepeated its name. This time he pointed to the lake. The village no longerexisted because it had been submerged, and allthe valley too. The lake was not a natural one, but a man-made reservoir.
1)I felt asif...是方法状语还是表语从句? as you sometimes do in dreams - 方法状语能理解,但asin a nightmare 缺少do,这是什么比较结构呢?没了解。
2)riding inmy direction 是不是可剖析随着状语?all the vallley - 可数名词单数the valley前为何可以用all呢?
1 as if 从句为表语从句。as in a nightmare 就像在噩梦中一样。阅读中不必每一个句子或结构都要剖析,看清楚意思即可。这显然是比较分句的一种简略,简略到as+介词短语。意思非常了解了,不需要再剖析。要掌握念书,不做书呆子。
2 riding in my direction 剖析为非限制性定语最好。all可以修饰复数名词、不可数名词和单数名词,修饰单数名词时意为整个,等于the whole valley.
